Locations

  • The Kingdom of Navarre is one of two kingdoms on the Continent. Poromiel splits the Known World and the uninhabitable land of the Barrens lies beyond their borders

Navarre, made up of mountainous and forested land, is ruled by King Tauri. Heir to the throne is the King's eldest son, Halden Tauri. Second in line is Cam Tauri, the King's youngest son.

Navarre has been at war with Poromiel for four hundred years. The kingdom's primary resources include ore, hardy timber from the Eastern provinces, elk, and deer

Upon its unification, Navarre chose the common language, common to Calldyr, Deaconshire and Elsum provinces

    • Luceras, Morraine and Tyrrendor lost their language – there is always a cost; need to know the price we pay to live under the protection of the wards

    • Sacrificed during Unification:

      • Travel - can’t travel beyond the borders

      • Lost major parts of culture: songs, festivals, libraries

      • Things are lost in translation

      • Folklore - came from the other side of the border, but only survives as an oral history and is lost by generations

  • Poromiel is ruled by Queen Maraya, made up of mostly arid grasslands and marshlands. The Queen named Viscount Tecarus as heir to the Poromish throne. The kingdom's primary resources include textiles, grains, and unique crystalline gems.

  • The Tyrrendor Province is part of the kingdom of Navarre. Following the death of Fen Riorson, no noble has claimed duchy of Aretia, leaving Xaden as the heir apparent. The fortress of Aretia was the former capital of Tyrrendor and was burned in the apostasy.

It is in the process of being rebuilt. Thick stone walls protected Riorson House from the fire. Riorson house was built into the side of the mountain and has never been sieged.

There’s a network of caves within the valley that houses Aretia, which was where Brennan hid and recovered after the rebellion.

    The Hatching Grounds

The valley above Riorson House was the ancestral hatching ground for the Dubhmadinn line of black dragons (Tairn and Codagh’s line) and later reclaims this purpose after several hatchlings choose to emerge following their relocation from The Vale. This transformation alters the magic of the area, sending a pulse that alerts every creature within a 4-mile radius capable of channeling.

    The Wardstone

Aretia is not under the protection of any wards, as it’s too far from Basgaith. It does, however, have its own dormant wardstone. If they could power the wardstone, they would be able to generate protection, weave extensions to Poromiel.

The chamber walls are lined with intricate, ancient masking runes that extend upward towards the open sky, concealing the location from anyone flying overhead. The wardstone itself is described as a shimmering black pillar, standing twice the height of Xaden, with an estimated circumference requiring nine people with arms outstretched to encircle it. A series of circles, each fitting within the next and spanning at least six feet across are etched into the stone's center. Along the path of these circles, runes are carved, almost resembling the pattern found in Warrick's journal. When inactive, the stone is said to feel cold and lifeless.

Tyrrendor was only able to keep their runes because it is too woven into their architecture.

    The Tyrrish Rebelion

During the reign of Fen Riorson, he led a rebellion against Navarre from his home in Aretia. The assumed goal of the rebellion was to declare independence for Tyrrendor, making Aretia the capital of a new kingdom.

During the Battle of Aretia, the Navarrian military fought against the Tyrrish Rebellion. The city was burned to the ground, leaving it in ruins.Following the battle, the Treaty of Aretia was signed. In honor of the lives lost and those saved by the treaty, July 1 was proclaimed as Reunification Day. The treaty also resulted in the transfer of Tyrrendor’s representation in the King’s Senarium from the House of Riorson to the House of Lewellen.

    The Tyrrish Revolution

Since the city’s destruction, it has become home to the Revolution, and the Assembly that governs it. Because General Melgren cannot foresee any outcomes when more than three children with rebellion relics are together, and most nobles weren't eager to spend money to rebuild a scorched town or be taxed on unusable land, they are able to assemble unnoticed in Aretia for the time being.

When half of the rider cadets leave Basgiath to join the Revolution and the Cliffsbane riders seek refuge in Aretia, the town struggles to accommodate the increase in both human and dragon population while trying to make improvements. Improvements made to the town since the influx of rider and flier cadets includes the addition of a forge, a luminary, and a printing press.

  • Basgaith War College trains members of the Navarrian military. It is made up of four Quadrants: Riders, Scribe, Healer, and Infantry. Basgaith is most popularly known for its dragon riders.

The building is split into two halves — the lower portion is dedicated to Scribes, Healers and Infantry as well as the Administration. The Citadel, the upper half, is home to the Riders Quadrant. To reach the Citadel and to enter the Riders Quadrant, candidates must cross the parapet. The Riders Quadrant only accepts volunteers and the 107 children of the rebellion.

Training lasts three years. During their first year, Cadets are not allowed to communicate with the outside world. Only second and third years are allowed to contact their families and friends outside of the college.

    Wards

    • There’s a wardstone at Basgiath, powered by the hatching grounds; Energy at hatching grounds at Basgiath can keep venin fed for decades, but Melgren thinks the wards are so infallible they won’t warn the public about venin

    • The wards take the shape of a dome over Navarre, they are boosted by the alloy and dragons and are woven into the ground. The alloy stored in the outposts tug the umbrella spokes twice as far. They can extend the ward by weaving magic.

    • Basgiath is home to a luminary that Aretia needs to power their ward. A luminary intensifies dragon fire hot enough to melt the alloy into weapons which is used to kill Venin. However, if Aretia were to take the forging device, Navarre won’t be able to replenish its stores in the outpost, resulting in civilian deaths if the wards fall. Xaden and Violet are not willing to sacrifice civilians to raise the Aretian ward.

    The Battle at Basgiath

    • Melgren “sees” a battle against Venin at Samara on the solstice where Navarre loses. Because of this, he calls for the Assembly and asks them to join forces and fight together. However, they refuse to provide assistance, as they are anticipating an attack at the College. Nevertheless, Melgren brings the Navarrian military to Samara to prepare for battle only to receive word that the Venin are attacking Basgiath.

    • Samara: outpost in the southern wing. Xaden and Sgaeyl are stationed here; Mira later joins them

    • Monserrat: outpost in the Morraine Province (same as Basgaith)

    • Resson: a city in the Krovla Province, just beyond Athebyne; lies outside the protection of the ward

    • Athebyne: a mountainside outpost in the Tyrrendor province near the border of Krovla, Poromiel; it is used as a trading post between Navarre and Poromiel due to the Trade Agreement of Resson

  • Venin are blamed for the lack of life in the Barrens and are thus assumed to live there. reside in The Barrens.

There are multiple kingdoms occupying the isles that surround The Continent. There are 5 large and 13 small isles that surround the Continent in every direction. One of its notable exports is Deverelli silk, a silk that is both soft and almost transparent.

One of the costs of Navarre's Unification was that travel to the isles became prohibited. Navarre has not traded with the isle kingdoms in centuries.[

Species & Magic

  • A dragon without its rider is a tragedy. A rider without their dragon is dead.” - Article 1, Section 1, The Dragon Rider's Codex

    The Empyrean

While little is known about the ways of dragons, or how they govern themselves, a clear hierarchy exists among the most powerful, and deference is paid to the elders. The Empyrean is the name for their leadership. During a meeting of the Empyrean, dragons do not communicate with their bonded riders because humans are not permitted to know what is said within the Empyrean.

    Introduction to Dragons

Dragonsare one of the species able to bond with humans and share their magical powers with them.

    • A dragon’s lifespan is estimated to be around 200 years.

    • Dragons do not typically bond riders until they are fully grown.

    • Their sacred hatching grounds are at the Vale.

    • Dragons can stay in their eggs for over 650 years. These embryos have the ability. to hear their surroundings and have some level of choice when they can decide. to hatch.

    • Ten dragons make up a full riot.

    • When Dragons bond with a rider, the humans develop signet abilities channeling their magic.

    Life Stages

    • Clutches: Dragons hatch from eggs, refered to as clutches, which are kept safe in their line’s den within their hatching ground, most commonly in the Vale. Andrana shares that dragons can stay within their eggs for up to 650 years. The embryos can hear their surroundings and have some level of choice in when they decide to hatch. Egg shells are metal and hold magic long after the dragon has hatched — they are used as an ingredient to create alloy, which can be imbued with power and used to kill venin.

    • Hatchlings: infant dragons; during this time they develop the ability to fly.

    • Feathertails: juveniles; they are kept far away from humans, which has led to the common false assumption that they are their own breed and don’t bond riders because they abhor violence. All Feathertails are gold, and they change colors when they reach adolescence to match their den. Feathertails have the ability to gift their powers to their human.

    • Adolescents: if bonded, dragons lose the ability to gift their power to their bonded human. Tairn notes they’re known for their inability to be rational.

    • The Dreamless Sleep: to progress between being juveniles and adolescents, dragons enter a long period of slumber called the Dreamless Sleep. This is necessary to ensure they age correclt and their bodies develop properly to allow them to bear a rider. It is a cricial time of rapid growth and development, the duration varies by breed, they do not dream and they wake up very hungry. Upon waking up, they develop their new tail type and color.

    • Fully Matured: it typically takes 2-4 years for a dragon fo fully mature once hatched.

    Physical Description

    • Dragons have four legs and two wings; they average 25ft. tall.

    • All dragons have semi-translucent wings and the tip of the wing joint is crowned by a single fierce talon. Each leg ends in razor-sharp talons and they have horns coming out the tops of their heads.

    • Violet often describes the smell of sulfur when around dragons.

    • Dragon scales are larger and thicker than a hand; they are layered into the scales above them in an intricate pattern which does no leave handholds or paths for a rider to climb.

    • Dragons have a part of the back called a seat — a smooth, scaly divot right in front of their wings. A pommel sits in front of the seat — a thick ridge of scales where their neck meets shoulder, and riders often grip this to stay seated.

    Powers & Abilities

Every dragon has a certain level of inner power, which they channel through their riders through lesser magic and to create an individual signet.

    • Lesser magic allows riders to open doors without touching them, preternatural speed, manipulating mage lights, place runes

    • When a dragon thinks its rider is ready, they are able to channel their power through their rider, giving them the ability to produce a signet

    • Signets manifest according to the person wielding them, but its strength is a reflection of the bond and power of the dragon.

    • Dragon Relic is a magical mark to. the skin of the bonded rider, symbolizing honor and power. The relic usually takes the shape of the dragon who gifted it.

"Signets are the result of the unique chemistry between rider and dragon and usually say more about the rider than the dragon. The stronger the bond and the more powerful the dragon, the stronger the signet.”

  • Bonding a Rider

Dragons must obtain their Right of Benefaction before they are permitted to bond; the head of their den must approve.

Each dragon-human bond is stronger than the previous. Just as a rider cannot live without its dragon, the loss / dissolution of a strong rider-dragon bond has significant impact on the dragon, which may result in the dragon’s death.

“They choose for reasons they don't see fit to share with us.” -Professor Kaori, Fourth Wing, Chapter 8, Fourth Wing

In the six centuries of recorded history of dragon and rider, there have been hundreds of known cases where a dragon simply cannot emotionally recover from the loss of their bonded rider. This happens when the bond is particularly strong and, in three documented cases, has even caused the untimely death of the dragon.” - Navarerre, An Unedited History by Colonel Lewis Markham

    Mated Pairs

The only relationship stronger than a dragon and its rider is one with its Mate. Their bond goes beyond the depth of human love to an undeniable requirement for proximity — this means mated pairs cannot be separated for significant periods of time, or their health diminishes. As a result they often bond riders in the same year and the riders are often stationed together.

    • Dragons mate for life

    • Mated dragons cannot survive without the other — if one dies, so does the other

    • Tairn and Sgaeyl are a mated pair. They are the strongest mated pair in centuries

  • Dens

Dragon dens are distinguished by color, which informs their personality.

    • Black Dragons

      • Considered to be the rarest type of dragonkind.

      • They are the smartest, the most discerning and the most cunning — it’s impossible to outsmart them.

      • They are “killing machines” and considered to be the deadliest den.

      • According to Violet, there hasn’t been one born in the last century.

      • Their original hatching grounds were in the valley above Riorson House in Aretia.

    • Blue Dragons

      • They are the most ruthless — the Blue Daggertail (the rarest of the blues) has knifelike spikes at the tip of their tail, which allows them to disembowel an enemy with one flick.

      • Do not comply with the law

      • Have an intimidating reputation. It is advised to not approach any blue dragons. Instead, one should run!

      • Known for their formidable size; their shades of blue vary

    • Green Dragons

      • Known for their keen intellect and rational countenance, which makes them the perfect siege weapons.

      • To approach a green dragon, lower your eyes in supplication and wait for their approval.

      • It is advised to never back down from a green.

    • Brown Dragons

      • It is advised to never show trepidation to a brown.

    • Orange Dragons

      • Known to be the most unpredictable, which makes them always a risk.

    • Red Dragons

      • It is advised to never look a red in the eye.

      • Red Scorpiontails, specifically, are the quickest to temper. Do not offend them, or you will die.

      • Red Swordtails are nasty when they get riled.

      • They prefer to be approached from the left and the front, if possible.

    Breeds

Dragon breeds are distinguished by their tail. Although tails are considered the breed of the dragon, they are a matter of a dragon’s choice and need.

    • Clubtail: ends in. asolid mass for bludgeoning

    • Daggertail: have knifelike spikes at the tip of the tail that can disembowel an enemy with one flick

    • Morningstartail: considered one of the deadliest breeds as they have the same bludgeoning power of a clubtail, but with spikes with the sharpness of a daggertail

    • Scorpiontail: tipped with poisonous barbs

    • Swordtail: long and sharpened on the edges

  • Not everyone in Navarre has been exposed to the fables of Venin and their wyverns. But Violet’s dad left her a book of these fables upon his death. However, when she seeks out a copy at the Scribe Quadrant, she learns that it does not exists. She finds this odd as the Scribes document and have a copy of each tome ever published. She later suspects that the government has outlawed the books that features them.

The folklore involves a tale of three brothers: one who bonded with dragons, one who bonded with gryphons, and the third brother who became so jealous that he “drew [magic] directly from the source, losing his soul and waging war on the other two.”

According to the lore channeling magic from the source, without the use of a dragon or gryphon, corrupts that person’s soul beyond salvation. They created wyvern to compete with dragons. Wyverns are flying creatures that lack front legs, relying on their membrane wings to move forward when landing. They have a mane of razor-sharp feathers down their necks with poison-barbed tails.

Fourth Wing confirmed this is not just a folklore, but reality. Venin are blamed for the lack of life in the Barrens and are thus assumed to live there. reside in The Barrens. It is mentioned within Violet's dream that at least one Venin, the Sage, is centuries old.

    How to Turn Venin

    • According to the story, channeling magic from the source, without the use of a dragon or gryphon, corrupts that person’s soul beyond salvation.

    • It was presumed that Venin cannot draw power from the source while within the wards' reach, which is why Navarre has not seen a Venin attack in 600 years. However, Jack confirms that it is possible to turn Venin within the wards and that they do not block all power. Venin are still able to channel from the ground and channel enough to survive. He also confirms that it's possible for Venin to control their dragons and not die if their bonded dragon dies.

    Hierarchy

    • Initiate: lowest level of venin; their eyes may have reddish rings depending on how often they drain

    • Asim: eyes fluctuate in varying degrees of red and the veins distend when riled; however, their veins are not “spiderwebbed” like a Sage

    • Sage: responsible for initiates. Eyes are permanently red and veins are perpetually distended toward their temples and expanding with age.

    • Maven: equivalent of Generals in venin hierarchy. A Maven has never been captured or studied.

    Powers

    • Venin use a staff and their hands to use their magic, appearing in balls of blue flames. They are immune from dragon fire and channel their power from the ground. Everything (plants, humans, etc.) is drained if they are caught in the path of a venin channeling from the ground.

      • Fire Wielding: differs from fire-wielding signets manifested by riders

      • Pain Projection: ability to force power into an enemy; originally thought to be Jack’s signet, but confirmed to be a venin ability

      • Gravity Manipulation: can lift opponents off the ground or force them down onto their hands and knees

      • Shields: Jack Barlowe was able to project a physical shield that deflected Xaden’s shadows

      • Destruction/Disintegration: with the closing of their fist, an asim caused Violet’s conduit to overheat and disintegrate.

    Weaknesses

    • Venin can be killed with the metal alloy that powers Navarre’s wards, which is forged into weapons and also power that wards, which inhibit their ability to draw power from the source, or from being struck by pure power (i.e., Violet’s lighting).

Wyvern: venin channel power into wyvern; when you kill a venin, it kills the wyvern

    • Breeds (determined by the color of their flame)

      • Blue

      • Green: faster

    • Their origin is unknown

  • Fliers are the Poromish soldiers who bond and ride gryphons. Gryphons and fliers bond for life. So, unlike riders, if a flier dies then a gryphon will die shortly after.

Riders do not wield signets. However, they each have a unique ability they call gifts. Similarly to riders, fliers are distinguished by their gryphon's gift abilities. Most of their lesser-magic gifts include mindwork; it's the only area where fliers have an upper hand on riders.

Flier cadets train at Cliffsbane Flight Academy, where they go through weapons training – swords, bows, and crossbolts. Gryphons do not have the ability to fly at high altitudes.

    Power

    • Once their gryphon channels through them, every flier can wield Lesser magic, enabling them to open doors remotely, move with unnatural speed, control mage lights, power ink pens, and inscribe runes.

    Drifts & Wings

    • A group of gryphons makes a drift, and they are stationed based on specialty.

      • The Nightwing specializes in the fight against venin. They are stationed at outposts facing The Barrens.

      • The Summitwing are stationed along the border with Navarre. Fliers stationed here are best suited for altitude, especially flying the summits of the Esben mountain range.

      • The Seawing are stationed along coastal outposts.

  • Runes are the great equalizer.

Runes are strands of magic pulled from a wielders' power, woven into geometric patterns for specific uses, then placed into an object for either immediate work or usage at a later date. This process is called "tempering". The rune will activate when triggered to perform whatever action it was tempered for.

They are an old Tyrrish magic (some may say a lost art) that were banned during the Unification so they would not fall into the wrong hands, especially when a flier is adept at runes, they are able to compete against signets.

Each shape has meaning. The points where the power is tied change the meaning. And combining shapes can change the meaning of the run. These can all influence activation, frequency, etc. This makes the use of runes limitless.

Wielders can choose the object, medium and the amount of magic they imbue into their runes and they must do so with care as magic / power is temperamental.

    Known Runes

    • Siphoning: runes woven to draw specific power

    • Unlocking: designed to unlock doors; can be used by someone who does not possess lesser magic

      • One of Violet’s daggers has this rune, but must be activated by need

    • Masking: can hide something, or somewhere from detection

    • Countering Signets / Gifts: can counter or block a specific abiity

      • Xaden designed one of Violet’s daggers with this rune to block Cat from using her gift on Violet

    • Protection: protects whomever carries the rune

      • This is the rune given to each of the 107 children of the Rebellion leaders, woven by Colonel Mairi; it was activated by dragon fire

    • Ward Raising: carved into the ward stones, which allowed them to be imbued and set ablaze to set wards

      • As seen on Aretia’s and Basgiath’s wardstones. Each stone had its own unique designs

    • Ward Extending: when imbued on alloy, it boosts the power of the wardstone to extend the protected area

      • These are located at outposts to extend the Navarrian wards

    • Summoning: acts as a beacon; can be countered with an unlocking rune

      • Used during the rune challenge; Cat unlocked it in the cave

    • Heating: creates heat enough to melt ice in seconds or set wood aflame

      • Demonstrated during class

    • Fire: creates fire; often carried by fliers as a way to light a torch

      • Demonstrated by Cat

    • Suspension: can suspend people or objects in mid-air

      • Used on the Rybstand chest

    • Hearing: can boost the user’s hearing ability

      • Violet made one for homework

    • Wyvern creation: venin use this to turn a stone into wyvern

      • Discovered by Mira and Violet

    • Tracking: capable of tracking someone else’s rune

    • Explosion: can be added and imbued onto arrowheads. to explode on impact

      • Given to Violet ahead of the Battle at Basgiath

    • Light: can draw naturally occurring excess magic from humans and dragons to cause illumination

      • mage lights

  • The first six riders to bond dragons approached the Empyrean to save their people. The dragons agreed as they viewed Venin as the more pressing enemy.

Through Violet’s research, she discovers that they didn’t just establish the wards, but personally carved the first ward stone. Which means, there is a good chance they carved the one in Aretia.

Literature & Lore

  • Violet receives a copy from her father. This children's book features a collection of stories about the lure of magic and dragons. They feature dark-wielding Venin and their wyvern.

Her father left her a note stating that it only takes one generation to erase history.

"My Violet, By the time you find this, you'll most likely be in the Scribe Quadrant. Remember that folklore is passed from one generation to the next to teach us about our past. If we lose it, we lose the links to our past. It only takes on desperate generation to change history-- even erase it. I know you'll make the right choice when the time comes. You have always been the best of both your mother and me. Love Dad.”

    • Page 47: "Everyone thinks most Rider cadets die from dragon fire. Truth be told, it's usually gravity that gets us."

    • Page 84: "It is one thing to cross the parapet your first year. But watching countless candidates lose their life to it feels a little like dying, too. Don't watch if you can help it."

    • Page 91"At some point, probably during your second year, you'll realize the trust you feel for your friends and family has nothing on the loyalty you develop for your squad."

    • Page 96"There's a course second year I can't tell you about, other than to say that it's hell. My only advice? Don't piss of anyone else's dragon."

  • It is a fraction of the length of other division rule books, likely because riders have trouble obey rules.

    • Article Four, Section One: "All cadet belongings are subject to search at the discretion of command."

    • Article Four, Section Two: "A cadet's discipline falls their chain of command before being brought to cadre.”

    • Article Four, Section Three: "Quadrant leaders cannot hurt each other without cause and calling a quorum of wingleaders, other Rider Quadrant leaders cannot be harmed."

    • Article Five, Section Seven"Though not forbidden, cadets are strongly encouraged not to develop strong romantic attachments while studying in the quadrant for the efficiency of the unit." ... "Though the chain of command may be consulted, the final say in any academic punishment or repercussion lies with the commandant's office."

    • Article Two, Section Three: "Barring invasion, only riders and designated scribes are permitted in the Riders Quadrant. To enter uninvited as infantry or even healer is to welcome a swift death.”

    • Article Four, Section One"Cadets who are found absent without leave will be subject to court-martial by their chain of command, if they are not executed on sight."

    • Addendum 5.3: "In addition to last year's changes, marked ones assembling in groups of three or more will now be considered an act of seditious conspiracy and is hereby a capital offense."

  • Navarre, An Unedited History by Colonel Lewis Markham

    • "In response to the Great War, dragons claimed the western lands and gryphons the central ones, abandoning the Barrens and the memory of General Daramor, who nearly destroyed the Continent with his army. Our allies sailed home and we began a period of peace and prosperity as the provinces of Navarre united for the first time behind the safety of our wards, under the protection of the first bonded riders.”

    • "The first known gryphon attack occured in 1 AU (After Unification) near what is now the trading post of Resson. At the edge of the dragon-protected border, the post has always been vulnerable to attack and, over the course of the past six centuries, has changed hands no less than eleven times in what has become a never-ending war to secure our borders from our power-hungry enemies.”

    • "In his last days of interrogation, Fen Riorson lost touch with reality, railing against the kingdom of Navarre. He accused King Tauri, and all who came before him, of a conspiracy so vast, so unspeakable, that it does not bear repeating by this historian. The execution was swift and merciful for a madman who cost untold lives."

    • "The Migration of The First Year is one of the crowning achievements of Navarre's unification. What a celebration of the human spirit, to leave a life of war and enter one of peace, blending people, languages, and culture from every region of the continent and forming a cohesive, united society, whose only goal is mutual security."

    • "The day Augustine Melgren manifested his signet changed warfare for the kingdom of Navarre forever."

Gryphons of Poromiel, A Study in Combat by Major Garion Savoy

    • "Half palace, half barracks, but entirely fortress, Riorson House has never been breached by army. It survived countless sieges and three full-out assaults before falling under the flame of the very dragons it existed to serve."

    • "His first true action of rebellion was to seek allies, the first of which was Viscount Tecarus of the Poromish province of Krovla."

On the Aristocracy of Poromiel by Pearson Kito

    • "Having refused every proposal from the isle kingdoms, Queen Maraya has named her distant cousin, Viscount Tecarus of Cordyn, as her heir. As the viscount is living in his fifth decade and has no direct heirs of his own, the decision has not been a popular one.”

  • The Journey of the First Six

A Secondhand Account by Sagar Olsen First Curator of the Scribe Quadrant, Basgiath War College. Translated into the common language by Captain Madilyn Calros, Twelfth Curator of the Scribe Quadrant, Basgiath War College. Translated and Redacted for Academic Consumption by Colonel Phineas Cartland, Twenty-Seventh Curator of the Scribe Quadrant, Basgiath War College. Mostly filled with scribe-centric stories about the Great War that are heavily redacted, with one vague passage about discovering the ability to extend the wards

"It was only when we pushed the wards to their true limits, extending them far past what we thought possible and to what I now question as sustainable, that we defined the borders of Navarre, regretfully knowing not every citizen would benefit from their protection."

The Journal of Warrick of Luceras translated by Cadet Violet Sorrengail and Dain Aetos

    • "With all we've sacrificed for this kingdom. We'd better be able to defend it."- Transcribed only by Cadet Violet Sorrengail

    • "It was never our continent. From the very beginning, it was theirs, and we were simply allowed to live here.” - Transcribed only by Cadet Violet Sorrengail

    • "The blood of life of the six and one combined and set the stone ablaze in an iron rain.”

    • "The breath of life of the six and the one combined and set the stone ablaze in an iron flame.”

    • "Nothing kills powerful, unshakable love faster than opposing ideologies.”

    • "The combined hatching grounds at Basgiath is our generation's greatest asset... and our greatest liability.”

The Journal of Lyra of Morraine transcribed by Cadet Jesinia Neilwart

    • "I am alone in thinking the knowledge of wards, the protections they provide, should not solely benefit Navarre, and it has cost me everything."

The Sacrifice of Dragonkind by Major Deandra Naveen

    • "Many historians choose to ignore the sacrifices made by both humans and dragonkind to establish Navarre under the first wards in favor of praising the spirit of unification, but I would be remiss not to mention the losses suffered, both in terms of the ancestral hatching grounds of each dragon breed and the civilians who did not survive the continent-wide migration that resulted from the opening of Navarre's borders... or those lost when we closed them.”

    • "It is the valley above Riorson House, heated by natural thermal energy, that is its greatest asset. For there lie the original hatching grounds of the Dubhmadinn Line, from which two of the greatest dragons of our time-- Codagh and Tairneanach-- Descend."

    • "As dragons ferociously guard both their young and any information regarding their development, only four facts are known about the Dreamless Sleep. First, it is a critical time of rapid growth and development. Second, the duration varies from breed to breed. Third, as the name suggests, it is dreamless, and fourth, they wake up hungry.”

    • "Dragons do not answer to the whims of men.”

    • "By their third year, a rider must attain full and complete control over their shields. Otherwise, in moments of extreme stress, they are susceptible to being not only influenced by their dragon's emotions but controlled by them.”

    • "I'll say one thing for dragonfire. It kills quickly."

    • "What no one openly says is that while all four quadrants obey the Code of Conduct, a rider's first responsibility is to the Codex, which often overrules the regulations other quadrants live by, By definition: the riders make make their own rules.”

    • "There is a natural distrust that must be overcome between infantry cadets and riders. This exists mainly because riders will never trust that infantry has the courage to hold the line when dragons arrive, and infantry will never trust that the dragons won't eat them.”

    • "The things that happen behind closed doors in the Riders Quadrant in order to turn young cadets into full-fledged riders are enough to turn the staunchest of stomachs. Those prone to queasiness should not pry.”

    • "Every few years, a squad comes along that defies all expectations. They rise through the ranks, secure every patch, win every challenge. And then... they inexplicably falter, then fall. They call it the burnout effect: they flare too fast, too bright to sustain the pace. Sad, really, but mildly entertaining to watch them turn on one another.”

    • "Gods save us from the ambitions of second-years. They think they've experienced everything because they've survived their first year, but in reality, they only know enough to get themselves killed.”

    • "The only signet more terrifying than an inntinnsic is a truth-sayer. And yet we let them live."

    • "The only crime worse than murdering a cadet is the unfathomable act of attacking leadership."

    • "Mastery of one's signet does not occur at Basgiath, nor in the years directly after. No rider alive truly believes they've reached the limitations of their power. The dead ones may feel differently."

    • "There is nothing more sacred than the Archives. Even temples can be rebuilt, but books cannot be rewritten.”

    • "All tome requests at the Archives of Basgiath must be recorded and filed. Any cadet who fails to do so will be reported for dereliction of duty, as well punished for the loss of any text they failed to accurately track."

    • "The first time you are caught in the Archives after the door seals for the evening will be the last. The complex magics put in place to preserve our texts are not compatible with life."

  • The Tactical Guide to Defeating Dragons by Colonel Elijah Joben

    • Chapter Two"From the dangerous waves of the Arctile Ocean to the lowest plains of the Tyrrendor plateau, the Cliffs of Dralor rise to over twelve thousand feet in places, making them unflyable by gryphon. While there are three well-carved paths within Navarre to ascend the plateau, along the Krovlan border exists only one.. and it is deadly to both gryphon and flier. Do not attempt under any circumstance..”

    • Chapter Three"The easiest way to defeat a dragon is to kill its rider. Though the creature will most likely survive the blow, it will be stunned long enough to be felled."

    The Canon of the Flier

    • Chapter One: "When a gryphon bonds, it does so for life. Guard your life as you would your gryphon's, for they are forever intertwined.”

Captain Lera Dorrell’s Guide to Vanquishing the Venin Property of Cliffsbane Flight Academy

    • "It was only in the last fifty years that we realized they were no longer coming solely coming from the Barrens. They'd begun to take recruits, teaching those who never bonded a gryphon to channel what was not theirs to take, to upset the balance of magic by stealing it from the very source. The problem with mankind is we too often find our souls to be a fair price for power.”

    • "It is somewhat fitting that the only weapon capable of killing a dark wielder is the same thing that drove them to soullessness... power.”

    • "Many of our most esteemed tacticians have tried to estimate the approaching tipping point-- where the outcome of the war may have been decided even though we still fight. Many believe it will come in the next decade. I fear it will arrive much sooner than that."

Venin, A Compendium by Captail Drake Cordella (The Nightwing Drift)

    • "Defeating a dark wielder begins with knowing where they rank in age and experience. Initiates have reddish rings to their eyes that come and go depending on how often they drain. Asims' eyes fluctuate in degrees of red, and their veins distend when riled. Sages'-- those responsible for initiates-- eyes are permanently red, their veins perpetually distended toward their temples, expanding with age. Mavens-- their generals-- have never been captured for examination."

Major Edvard Tiller’s Unaccredited Study of the Venin

    • "Though there is some debate, it is greatly believed that turning venin heightens one of the dark wielder's senses. It is this scholar's belief that the one responsible for the death of King Grethwild developed keener eyesight. For not even the best of His Majesty's royal fliers could see through the darkness the venin hid within to slay our beloved king."

  • The Aretia Accord

    • Article Two, Section One: "Fliers and riders are held equal in every regard with the exception of wing structure. Riders will maintain their wings, sections, and squads, as well as retain their command. Every drift will be absorbed by a squad, and their leader will replace the squad's current executive officer for unit cohesiveness and efficiency.”

    • "It is not unheard of that a candidate enters the Riders Quadrant having been paid to assassinate a cadet. I'm sorry Mira was targeted but proud to say she dispatched the threat quickly. You have enemies, General."

Memorandum from Professor Carr to General Sorrengail

    • "Though her extraordinary signet allows her to extend the wards around herself and her dragon, Cadet Sorrengail lacks the consistent ability to produce her own wards without extreme emotional distress. I'm sorry to report I doubt this ability will develop in time. I had such hopes for her."

    Letters from Xaden to Violet

    • "Garrick has always been my best friend. His father was my father's aide, which in a way makes him my Dain, except trustworthy. After Liam, Bodhi was and still is the closest thing I have to a brother, perpetually tagging along a step behind.”

    • "Sgaeyl watched me kill another cadet for bullying Garrick during Threshing. She says she chose me for my ruthlessness, but I think I just remind her of my grandfather."

    • "My dad hoped I'd go into the infantry like he did. He thought riders were pompous pricks, and in his defense.. we really are.”

    • "In the years after my father died, I forgot what it felt like to be loved. Then I entered the quadrant and became the monster everyone needed me to be, and I never regretted it. But then you gave those words to me, and I remembered... and nearly lost you, too. I'm striving to be better for you just like I promised, but I need you to know that monster is still there, screaming to use every ruthless part of me to get your words back."

    • "My last words with my father before the Battle of Aretia were spoken in anger, because he was sending me away for my own safety. I'm not sure I'll ever forgive myself for that, but I like to think he forgives me."

    Letter from Liam to Sloane

    • You're going to love Violet. She's smart and stubborn. Reminds me a lot of you, actually. You just have to remember when you meet her: she's not her mother.”

    Unsent Letter from Lilith Sorrengail

    • "Most generals dream of dying in service to their kingdom. But you know me better than that my love. When I fall, it will be for one reason only: to protect our children."

    • Waking up in Aretia

      • Brennan is alive and is now a lieutenant colonel operating under an alias, meets with Xaden and the Assembly of the revolution. Brennan reveals that Tairn's previous rider, Naolin, sacrificed himself to heal Brennan, after which dragons hid him in caves beneath Aretia.

      • At the assembly meeting, Imogen states that Xaden has already taken responsibility for Violet “as brutal of a custom as it may be.” Violet is taken aback but doesn’t have the opportunity to inquire what she means. The Assembly doesn’t seem to understand the decision, but Xaden says his “decision was simple, she’s worth a dozen of me.”

      • Violet overhears discussions about a non-functional forge, the need for a luminary, and potential negotiations with Viscount Tecarus. Naturally, Violet is curious and Brennan warns Violet the archives are off limits. Brennan reveals they have about six months before the venin breach the wards. The revolution is actively hunting for the weapon that killed / put off the venin 600 years ago, they are forging weapons in the meantime.

      • Violet quotes her father saying that one generation cleared history of knowledge that could help them take down the dark wielders. Navarrians aren’t willing to risk their safety by providing the alloy that powers the furthest reaches of the wards: “In a world of dragon riders, gryphon fliers and dark wielders, it’s the scribes that hold all the power”

      • The 8 students go back to Basgiath in time for graduation, but they’ve been instructed to conceal recent events involving wyverns and venin.

    • Returning to Basgiath

      • Violet inquiries if the movement has scribes it considers friends, knowing that they have historically wiped or intentionally ignored the existence of venin and wyvern.

      • Violet grabs Liam’s letters and entrusts them to Rhiannon.

      • Violet issues an ultimatum to Xaden - she requires full disclosure / transparency or she’ll fall out of love him

      • Upon returning to Basgiath for graduation, Xaden discloses that Colonel Aetos authorized their combat mission, much to General Sorrengail's dismay. The cadets fabricate a story about Liam and Soleil's deaths. Xaden tells Basgiath leadership that a drift of gryphons killed two dragons on their way to Resson.

      • Vice Commandant Varrish replaces Colonel Aetos and delivers missives declare that Violet and Xaden can only see each other every fortnight. They’ll have only 48 hours of leave to fly to and from each other. Sgaeyl and Tairn won’t be able to communicate but will be able to sense feelings.

        • Xaden warns that all their missives will likely be intercepted

        • And he asks that she not involve herself in anything Bodhi or the others are doing. Doing so would endanger everything they’re working for. He tells her that she can only fully trust the others with them at Resson, but not to risk the other marked ones.

    • Classes Begin & Conscription Day

      • 91 dragons willing to bond, fewer dragons than the year before. Empyrean are divided on whether or not they should get involved with the venin; “humans aren’t the only ones keeping secrets.”

      • The implementation of a classified Rider Survival Course.  - during which the cadets can be abducted at any time from anywhere on campus. They’ll learn navigation, survival tactics and how to withstand interrogations (which Violet is worried about now that she holds valuable information about the Revolution and venin)

      • Violet begins clandestine research into Basgiath's history and wards. Her recent revelations make her wary of the information the scribes have recorded and host in the Archives.

        • Violet learns that archives are translating tomes in common language for easier reading; riders aren’t allowed past the study table; Archives are almost empty on Sundays with most third years cycling home for break

        • Jessenia recorded a request by a rider (regulation) and he was punished for it

      • Rhiannon flags to Violet that she expects something is happening in the Healer Quadrant, citing that Nolon (mender) looks terrible and there’s now a guarded door that Varrish is

      • A first-year cadet attempts to assassinate Violet, quoting Aetos (“secrets die with the people who keep them”) during his attack, confirming that the riders from the Athebyne mission have become targets.

    August

    • Tensions at Basgiath Grow

      • Violet faces punishment from Varrish for protecting Andarna. She’s pushed to near burnout. When Varrish continues to threaten Violet, Tairn attacks Solas when Varrish charges Violet with dereliction of duty. Tairn refused to let go of Solas’ neck until Varrish apologized to Violet on his knees.

      • Nolon bumps into Xaden and Violet in the hallway and says, “It’s hard work mending a soul. I’ve been at it for months now.”

    • The Dreams

      • During her visit to Samara, Violet admits to Xaden that she’s unable to sleep because she has nightmares about Resson. She dreams about a million different ways they could have lost… that other members of the squad, including Xaden, die, or that the Sage takes Xaden.

    September

    • Spar Challenge

      • Dain challenges Violet to the mat. During their combat, Dain tells Violet that he didn’t know what his father was going to do with the memory he pulled from Violet – that Xaden and Garrick were at Athbyne. He had said that he would miss her as a response to her choosing Xaden over him. He also reveals that Lilith was the one that carved the 107 lines on Xaden’s back.

      • Following the match, Rhiannon pulls Violet aside and starts to piece the puzzle together – that Dain can read memories, that he stole her memory, that the other members of the Resson squad are being assassinated, that Violet and the rest of the squad saw something she wasn’t supposed to. When Rhiannon asks Violet what killed Deigh, Violet responds that she already knows that part of the story… then Violet asks her to never ask her that question again, begging “please don’t make me lie to you.”

      • Aaric breaks up the conversation and as he walks away with Violet, he reveals he knows the secret that she’s hiding. He asks if Rhiannon is catching on and shares that he figured it out when his guards started carrying the alloy-hilted daggers.

    • Dreams Intensify

      • Violet describes her dream during which a venin speaks to her, telling her that “there’s nowhere to run”. In her dream, he stops time. “So disappointing – all that power at your fingertips and yet you insist on fleeing over and over, using the same failed tactics and expecting what? To escape? There is no escaping me, rider. Fight me and die. Or join me, and live beyond the ages. But you will never escape me. Not when I've waited centuries for someone with your power.”

    • The Interrogation

      • The squad undergoes harsh interrogation training while Xaden is visiting Violet at Basgiath. When Varrish finds Xaden and Violet together, Xaden intuits and warns Violet that Varrish intends to kill Violet for the embarrassment Tairn put them through. When Violet responds that he can’t possibly know that, Xaden says, “His intentions are pretty fucking clear. Trust me.

      • During the interrogation, Nolon and Varrish have a conversation about Nolon’s “other patient,” stating that he could use Varrish’s signet to help him determine if he’s missing something. He tells Varrish that he’s done all he can for the patient. Nolon directs Varrish out of the interrogation chamber, giving the squad the opportunity to escape.

      • However, it becomes clear to Rhiannon, Sawyer and Ridoc that Violet knows something that she shouldn’t, and it’s the reason Varrish is torturing her. The squad is able to escape the chamber with the help of the daggers Xaden gifted Violet during her first year.

      • A non-approved leaflet is distributed during Battle Brief

    • The Resurrection

      • Jack Barlowe returns to Basgiath. Markham announces his return, crediting his resurrection to Nolon’s mending. The squad immediately notes that Jack will try to kill Violet, again.

    • An Attack on Samara

      • Minutes after Jack’s return, Violet learns that there was an attack on Samara. She and Tairn rush to check on Xaden and Sgaeyl. Upon their arrival, Violet confirms that Xaden was wounded at battle, but was mended. His arm has a gash that would have resulted in the loss of a limb.

      • Xaden tells Violet that he’s just as reckless for her as he is for her, but she needs him to tell her the three words he so desperately wants from her before she can fully trust him.

    October

    • Threshing

      • Andarna continues to sleep. Aaric bonds a blue clubtail (with an ease that reminds Violet of Liam and Xaden) and Sloane bonds a red daggertail. Jesinia informs the squad that she found a tome, using their code word to confirm she located the vault. Ridoc runs to meet her, offering to regroup with Violet afterward.

      • Violet is on watch duty. Four infantry assassins corner her on the turret. When she’s hanging off the edge of the tower, Jack Barlowe kills her attacker and saves her. He says that he didn’t realize it was here and that riders don’t die at the hands of others.

      • Ridoc arrives afterward and tells Violet the journals are in the royal vault, but it’s warded. And they need someone from the royal bloodline to get through.

    • The Vault

      • During Xaden’s next visit to Basgiath, he agrees to break into the vault with the squad. With the help of Aaric, they successfully get the Journals of Warrick and Lyra from the royal vault.

      • However, after Xaden is able to leave with one journal, Violet discovers that Jesinia was caught when Nolon drugs her with the signet suppressant. As her world fades to black, Violet notices that Nolon is holding a cream bag, hearing him say, “I never like to see you hurt. But I can’t protect you from the consequences of your own actions when you risk the safety of every civilian in this kingdom.”

    • The Capture

      • Violet endures five days of torture at the hands of Varrish and his associates, breaking her bones over and over.

      • While in captivity, Violet hallucinates Liam. He keeps her company – her voice of reason.

      • Varrish reveals that his signet allows him to see people’s weakness. While he originally couldn’t see hers due to her strong shields, during the interrogation with her power weakened, he could see that her weakness is those she love – her squad, her sister, Xaden. Violet realizes that her capture is a trap to lure Xaden.

      • Violet overhears Varrish discussing Jack with his associates. He says that while he’s interested to see the creative ways Jack could torture Violet, he can’t be trusted. Instead, Varrish brings in Dain. Liam tells Violet she can show Dain the visions she wants him to see.

      • Dain, in a surprising turn of events, aids in her rescue after learning the truth about the revolution. Xaden arrives to help, resulting in Varrish's demise (by Violet’s hand).

      • On their way out, Xaden, Dain, Garrick and Violet bump into Lilith. She explains that Xaden has dragons dropping wyvern at outposts, which has caused leadership to rush out of Basgiath. Violet confronts her and LIlith says that when she has children, she’ll understand the lies and risks she’d take to protect them. Lilith insinuates that she knows her daughter well enough to know that she would have unraveled the secret as a scribe to keep her safe, which is why she pushed her into the Riders Quadrant. When Violet entered the Quadrant, Lilith called in the favor Xaden owed her – he was to keep Violet safe outside of challenges or her own naiveté.

      • Violet realizes that Xaden may not have had a choice when it comes to Violet – she’s always been forced upon him.

      • “And so the war of the father becomes that of the son.”

    • The Relocation

      • The revolutionaries relocate to Aretia, establishing a new base at Riorson House. This period is marked by Andarna's awakening, Violet's attempts to decipher ward activation, and the integration of Tyrrish rune magic into the curriculum.

      • Navarrian military riders deserted their outposts and joined the Revolution, among them was Mira.

      • Violet attempts to raise the wards but fails. She’s determined to make progress and decides to negotiate with Viscount Tecarus.

    • A Mission

      • Violet and Xaden (along with Brennan and Mira) have a mission to negotiate with Viscount Tecarus.

      • Tecarus challenges Violet to lightning strike a Rybestad chest – one of the most valuable items Fen Riorson had owned.

      • Before Violet is able to strike the chest, a venin emerges from the chest, looking like they had been kept in prison for weeks. Together, the Sorrengail siblings are able to kill the venin.

      • Tecarus agrees to give the revolution the luminary if they took and trained the hundred flier cadets that took shelter with him after Cliffsbane Flight Academy was destroyed by venin, and supply the gryphon drifts with weapons.

    • Gryphons & Flyers

      • As the flyers cross into Tyrrendor, a dragon hatches in Aretia, activating the hatching grounds and changing the magic in the Vale. Tairn confirms that any beings in the vicinity that can wield would feel  the shift, including wyvern. When wyvern attack, Violet shares her suspicious that the wyvern and venin share a hive mind. It’ll only be a matter of time until they attack Aretia.

      • The flyers are integrated into the Revolution training program, with tensions rising between Cat and Violet and it extends into their squads / drifts.

      • The cadets are introduced to Tyrrish culture and the art of runes – the great equalizer. Xaden tells Violet that the rune he keeps next to his bed is the one woven by Liam and Sloane’s mom. It’s incredibly complex and was given to each of the 107 children of the Rebellion leaders, and the kids were instructed to keep them on their persons at all times. When the parents were burned for their treason, it activated the runes and marked them with the rebellion relics.

    • The Throne Room

      • In order to address the tensions, combat challenges are permitted. Anyone can be challenged, but each person can only fight once. Cat challenges Violet. Once on the mat, Violet notices that Cat’s moves are familiar, and she quickly realizes that Xaden also trained Cat. Cat uses that to her advantage, manipulating Violet’s jealousy and insecurity against her in combat – a violation of the Codex. Yet, Violet manages to pin her down. After Violet decides she can’t kill Cat, Xaden interferes and separates them.

      • He brings Violet to the Assembly room where he sits her on Aretia’s throne. THIS IS THE EPIC THRONE SCENE As soon as Violet finishes, Xaden says he shouldn’t have done that. He reassures Violet that he has never loved Cat, Cat will never wear the Tyrrish crown, and Cat will never be his.

      • With help from Dain, Violet realizes that she’s mistranslated the journal.. But she has a theory for how she might be able to raise the wards. She tells her squad that she doesn’t know if they should raise the wards because the flyers would lose their powers.

    December

    • Rune Challenge

      • During a training mission Violet and Cat are teamed up with Sloane and Visia. Andarna and Kiralair accompanied them on foot as they searched for runes. They entered a cave where they identified that a rune should be. As they searched for the rune, Visia asks Violet if her second signet from Andarna has manifested; Sloane mentions that second signets manifest in people who bond a dragon of a direct descendent (e.g., a parent, grandparent, etc.) or it turns they mad. Violet realizes that Xaden had previously mentioned that Sgaeyl had previously bonded with his grandfather, but before she could think more of it, they were confronted by Solas, who had been hiding inside the cave, after his rider, Burton Varrish was killed by Violet. Visia is killed instantly by the swipe of Solas’ claw and Andarna shields Violet, Cat and Sloane from his fire. In the chaos of the attack, Sloane’s signet is revealed. Tairn confirms “she is as Naolin was” – a siphon.

      • As she’s being attended to by a healer, Xaden learns that Violet had risked her life to protect Cat. Violet reveals that she did so to protect Xaden from retribution from Tecarus if Cat had died. Xaden tries yet again to tell her that Violet alone is the most important person in the world to him and that he could not live without her, and she should never risk her life for someone else. They argue about her inability to trust herself when it comes to loving him, with Xaden arguing that she’s “the smartest person I know. If you actually wanted the answers, you’d ask the right questions.” After a back-and-forth, Violet confronts Xaden about his second signet.

    • Raising the Wardstone at Aretia

      • Xaden and Violet are interrupted by the news that venin and wyvern approach. Violet rushes to the wardstone and tries her theory – fire of the six – to power the stone. Energy hums on the stone, but they don’t have time to test it. Xaden and Violet are then dispatched to the front lines, where Violet calls Xaden out for not answering the question she finally asks. He said that he didn’t think she would ever ask, and she explains that she doesn’t know if she could ever really love him if she doesn’t know who he really is.

      • Xaden reveals that no one knows what his second signet is because it’s bad enough to get him killed. Violet guesses what it might be based on Xaden’s personality because they manifest out of a rider’s need. She lists: his need for control, need to know who he can trust and make snap character judgments; information is his most pressing need. Violet guesses that he’s an intinnsic, and Xaden confirms he’s a type of intinnsic - he can read intentions. The second signet manifested a month after his shadows, which developed stronger than anticipated so it helped throw off suspicions when a second signet didn’t manifest. It also helped that Sgaeyl’s previous rider of record was thought to be great uncle not grandfather. From Tairns reaction, it is clear that Sgaeyl had also kept this information from him. Xaden states that there are some secrets that can’t be shared between mates. “Less than a minute. That’s how long it took for you to fall out of love with me.”

      • The wards successfully deter the wyvern and venin, but they find out that the wards aren’t strong enough to block flyer power. To top it off, Melgren requested an audience with the Assembly and the Sorrengail sisters.

      • During the meeting with Melgren, Lilith tells Violet she has the “heart of a rider, but the mind of a scribe” and she trusts her to protect her siblings. However, she warns that Asher told her that Warrick thought it was dangerous to share the secrets of powering a wardstone – he wanted the only one in Basgiath, so whatever they did to raise the wards in Aretia, it wouldn’t last. She hands them Lyra’s journal with hope that it contains the answers they need to strengthen the ward. She encouraged them to check the bodies, during which they discovered that the wyvern are powered by runes.

    • Battle at Basgiath

      • During Battle Brief, Violet realizes that the venin aren’t attacking Samara as Melgren predicted; she anticipates that the planned attack is actually going to be in Basgiath, leading to the Revolution’s return to Navarre.

      • Upon their arrival, Violet and Mira forced Lilith to check on the wards to prove they’re protected. They walk in on Jack Barlowe in the process of taking them down with his dragon, Baide. Jack sacrifices Baide, whose blood fells the ward.

      • When Ridoc and his dragon are under attack, Violet and Sawyer run to his aid. Sawyer is attacked by a wyvern, and it takes his leg. Tairn and Violet have no choice but to split or risk losing both Slieg and Sawyer.

      • Violet ends up on the ground, looking for help with Sawyer. Andrana saves Violet when she is cornered, revealing her ability to camouflage… or at least that’s what Violet thinks she sees. She’s not sure.

    • Raising the Wardstone at Basgiath

      • During the battle, Jesinia discovers that Lyra’s journal states that the breath of the 7 – seven circles, seven runes, seven dragons. She shares this Violet, who puts pieces together that Andarna might be of the seventh den.

      • Xaden reveals that the dark wielders are waiting for him, and he’ll buy her time to figure out the wardstone by fighting them. He states that the venin from Resson thought they’d be at Samara answering Melgren’s request, but Xaden tells Violet that he doesn’t want her to ask how he knows the sage’s thoughts. Violet remembers the venin from her dream:

        • “The rest turn for power, but you will turn for something much more dangerous, much more volatile. You will. You’ll tear down the wards yourself when the time comes. And you won’t do it for something as trite as power.”

      • Violet finds Andarna and asks for her help powering the wardstone, telling Andarna what she suspects. Andarna replies “Different. That’s exactly how I've always felt…” and Violet starts to piece together that this why Andarna was allowed to bond, why the Empyrean allowed a juvenile to bond. Violet sees that her scales aren’t really black – they continue to shimmer and change colors. Finally, Andarna confirms she is the seventh breed and was left behind to ignite the wardstone. She agrees to help Violet.

      • When Violet drains her power trying to imbue the wardstone, and is on the brink of burnout, Lilith grabs Sloane and tells her she has no choice but to siphon her power. Aaric holds Violet back when she tries to stop her mother, Andarna blocks Violet’s way, choosing Violet’s life over Lilith’s. Lilith goads Sloane, “Tyrrendor’s heir is fighting for his life. You can stop it; you can save them all” She promises Sloane that her signet is “a conduit for power. You’re simply facilitating mine flowing into the stone.” But it’s Violet giving voice to her connection with Xaden and whisper of “Xaden’s dying” that makes Sloane give in. She drains Lilith’s power: “You’re everything we dreamed you would be. All three of you.”

    • The Twist

      • Andarna successfully activates the wardstone with her flame, raising the wards. Immediately, the wyvern fell and the venin ran. The Revolution successfully defends Basgiath.

      • Violet finds Xaden who confirms that he “snapped whatever tether he had on me… His body fell into the ravine” not confirmed dead. He can’t make eye contact with Violet.

      • After she tells him that Melgren wants them all back in Basgiath, Xaden says, “it’s safer for you hear. This is where we should be.” “You won’t be as scared under the full wards”...

      • In a shocking twist, Xaden is transformed into a venin during the battle. He was exhausted from wielding shadows before his battle against the General. If he hadn’t pulled from the ground, he would have killed all four of them, bringing to life the venin’s premonition: “I told you once that you would turn for love.” Xaden warns Violet,“You should be scared of me.” The story ends on a cliffhanger as Xaden seeks a cure for his condition, only to learn from Jack Barlowe that no cure exists.

    • Aaric Graycastle

      • Aaric reveals that he is observant and honorable when he describes to Violet how he noticed the daggers his guards started to carry and states that Navarrian leadership aren’t very good at hiding “it.” When Violet asks him to confirm what he knows, he responds: “Why else would I be here?”

      • Signets manifest as a reflection of the rider’s character and are as strong as the dragon whose power they draw from. Knowing what we do about Aaric, it is likely that his signet will reflect this – give him information that allows him to make the right decisions for the betterment of Navarre, setting him up to be the royal the kingdom needs – especially when he makes his dislike for his father clear.

    • Violet’s Second Signet:

      • Following a nightmare, Violet wakes Tairn and she asks him, “Do you see my dreams?” Train replies: “I have better things to do than monitor the machinations of your subconscious mind. If a dream bothers you, then leave it. Stop allowing yourself to be tortured like a hatchling and wake yourself like an adult.” Violet thinks: Human dreams don’t always work like that… Not for someone “who needs information to center myself,” who Xaden views as a “creature of logic and facts.”

      • At the end of the book, when we’re given Xaden’s POV, it’s confirmed that she’s been seeing Xaden’s dreams this whole time.

    • Venin signets: Though it has not been confirmed if Jack held onto his signet (and with Baide’s death, I’m not sure we can), it would be assumed that venin are likely to hold to their signets when they turn as the Sage in Violet’s dreams that he wants her is drawn to her abilities and his asim suggested the sage wants to “wield” her magic. But they are also able to function / “live” without their dragons.

    • Venin are tethered to the beings they make: Wyvern are connected to the venin that create them. Xaden describes that the general he fought fell into the ravine, but did not confirm his death: “I snapped whatever tether he had on me… His body fell into the ravine.” But is it that simple?

    • Violet and the Navarrian Heirs: Brennan references that the Sorrengails were previously stationed in Caldyr and when Violet sees Aaric at the parapet, she recognizes his eyes, hinting that there may have been more to her relationships with the royal family. When discussing past lovers, Violet notes that Xaden is “ridiculously on the mark with his infantry guess.”

    • Distance Wielder: When guessing Xaden’s second signet, Violet asks if he’s a distance wielder. This would allow him to cross miles within a single step, a signet that has not manifested in centuries. Xaden states that if he had that ability, he would’ve used it to see her while they were separated this year.

    • Xaden’s Mom: Xaden offers Violet information- father, grandfather / Sgaeyl, the rebellion. But she asks about his mother. An heir had to survive til the age of 10 then she left. He hasn’t seen or heard from her since.

“She will never sit on this seat”: During the throne scene, Xaden tells Violet that to him, there is a difference between being engaged and being betrothed and that he and Violet are “end game.” He reassures her that Cat “will never sit in this seat. She will never wear a Tyrrish crown. She’s never had me on my knees in front of her.”

    • Things we know:

      • Based on the fact that she’s translating the books, Jesinia will end the series alive and will achieve Curator despite the fact that she leaves the Adept program

    • Burned Bodies:

      • Bodies are burned for treason or death:

        • The Rebellion: The Leaders of the Rebellion were killed by dragon fire (Codagh’s). It was his dragon fire that activated the runes the Leaders’ children held, marking them with their rebellion relics

        • Resson: In Iron Flame, Xaden confirms that the dragons’ and riders’ (Soleil and Liam) bodies were burned upon death at Resson

        • Amber: In Fourth Wing, after the attempted assassination on Violet following Threshing, Xaden accused Amber Mavis of assisting the cadets who broke into Violet’s room while she was sleeping. After Tairn shares Violet’s memory confirming Xaden’s accusation, Amber is burned by dragon fire on the dais.

    • Naolin Turned: “Naolin didn’t fail but it cost him everything”

      • Brennan woke up on a cliffside (assuming alone) and Marbh was wounded but he lived - other dragons saved them; hid them in the caves along the valley.  The assumption is that Naolin drained himself to save Brennan. However, this was never confirmed by Brennan. And when Violet tried to get confirmation from Tairn, he replied, “We will no longer speak of the one who came before” (ch 2)

      • Sloane “is as Naolin was” according to Tairn. She has the ability to be  “a conduit for power” and can facilitate the flow of power from a source into another.

        • This would have allowed Naolin to be able to channel from the ground and save Brennan (who stated it requires more power to mend himself than to mend others). IF they were lovers as Violet implied from the look she saw in Brennan’s eyes when she asked about him, one might assume that he would have given his life or done the unthinkable to save Brennan – just like Xaden.

    • Brennan’s Rune

      • Violet notices that there’s a rune-shaped scar on his arm; what is the rune? Was it used to save him? Or did Naolin use the rune to help in his resurrection? Perhaps as a conduit when he pulled from the ground?!

    • Violet was poisoned

      • In Fourth Wing, Xaden says that Brennan had never seen anything like it before; even though she recovered, it’s unclear what the poison was or what its long term impact would be

      • Violet was bleeding black

    • Sloane Mairi

      • Lilith tells Sloane she’s “a conduit for power. You’re simply facilitating mine flowing into the stone.”

      • In a battle against venin, Sloane will accidentally make physical contact with one. She’ll drain their power and realize that her signet is going to be vital in saving Xaden.

      • Similarly to how Liam was Violet’s protector, Sloane will be able to do the same for Xaden – a full circle end for his sacrifice for all the children of the Rebellion. When Violet whispers that “Xaden’s dying” that was all it took for Sloane to agree to do what Lilith requested.

      • “You can never give back what’s taken” BUT that doesn’t mean you can’t transfer it. Magic likes balance.

    • Magic: A Universal Study for Riders by Colonel Emezine Ruthorn: "At its core, magic demands balance. Whatever you take will be recouped, and it is not the wielder who determines the price." … So, for every rider that becomes venin, a new cadet will manifest the signet to combat it.

    • Mira is going to die

      • She has the ability to extend the wards

      • Mira is also a hero - she excels at everything and is proud to be a warrior. But most of all, she loves her siblings and was devastated to have lost Brennan, and has gone out of her way to check in on Violet and ensure her safety when she was able to.

      • She’s going to sacrifice herself to extend the wards at the closing battle against Venin

    • Xaden has a third signet

      • During the battle at Ressen Violet observes Liam “wielding spears of ice into the injured wyvern’s throat.” Well, Liam’s signet is farsight and wielding ice is a signet, not considered lesser magic. This suggests that the marked ones may have a second signet.

      • In Iron Flame, Violet confront Xaden asking him about his second signet. He retreats. Eventually, they find themselves alone and he discloses he’s an intinnsic, a signet that could get him killed. While he shares this, it is clear that Sgaeyl had not shared this with Tairn, and Violet learns that there are secrets even mates do not share. Sgaeyl had told Xaden that he could not tell anyone about this signet for fear that they would weaponize or kill him.

      • However, we also know that Xaden’s grandfather was previously bonded to Sgaeyl, meaning he was a direct descendant of a previous rider. This is strongly discouraged within the Empyrean as it can result in a rider manifesting two signets or going mad. So, if one believes that the marked ones received a signet from their rebellion relic, AND Xaden manifested two signets from his bond with Sgaeyl… that totals 3.

    • Xaden’s third signet

      • Signet Training: The day after Violet’s signet is manifested in Fourth Wing, during her first training session with Professor Carr, Xaden shares a memory with Violet. He was able to project his perspective of their interaction.

      • Throne Room: After Xaden and Violet’s throne interaction, Violet opens her eyes and asks, “What the hell did you do?” Xaden is feet away and backed up against the Assembly table; his immediate reaction is that he “should not have done that.” Violet describes that Xaden was gripping the table. Yet he goes on to clarify that he does not mean their intimacy as Violet claims, “I felt how much you need me… you gave me what I fantasized about.” Could he have been referring to the tangling of their minds?

        • And he says, “Don’t. Please don’t. I’m hanging by a thread.” Which like, yes that could be related to wanting to return the action… but also could be him stopping himself from revealing more?!

      • Interrogation Chamber: Violet saw Liam while she was in the interrogation chamber. He kept her company and was her reassurance that she would hold strong and help was on the way.

WALK THE PARAPET AND BOND A DRAGON: Fourth Wing (The Empyrean #1) by Rebecca Yarros (Amazon)

Romantasy was not on my list until this book. And this was soooo far off the list after TikTok led me astray one too many times. But after reading through a looooot of reviews, I was convinced. I had to give this book a try. And it was the best decision.

I finished the book in a single sitting (in the middle of the work-week, no less) — yup, I did not sleep. From the second I learned about the requirements for entering Basgaith’s Rider’s Quadrant, I became Violet’s biggest cheerleader. And as I devoured each page, I needed to know more: Will Violet survive all the challenges this College is throwing at her? Will Xaden get his revenge on the Sorrengails? What’s happening on the war-front? What secrets are people hiding? Why are they hiding secrets?

EXPOSE THE TRUTH AND START A REVOLUTION: Iron Flame (The Empyrean #2) by Rebecca Yarros (Amazon)

I have such mixed feelings about Iron Flame — on one hand I was so emotionally wrecked by some of the plot-lines, on the other, I was so frustrated by the introduction of the rest. And I may have wanted to murder a few characters… All I know is that the throne room changed me, and the ending broke me. If Rebecca continues to write cliff-hangers like this, I don’t know if I’ll be able to make it through this series. Consider yourself warned.
