Sneak Peek: A Novel Love Story by Ashley Poston

ON OUR BOOKSHELF

A Novel Love Story

by Ashley Poston

A pre-launch sneak peek of a love letter to the romance genre.

A love story written about love stories. It’s whimsical. It’s inception. It’s a romance reader’s dream come true.

When life isn’t unfolding quite how I’ve planned, I know I can trust my books to whisk me away to some magical land and envelop me in a whirlwind love with a happily ever after. I had the immense privilege of reading it ahead of its release via NetGalley, and I’m counting down the days til this book hits shelves so you can enjoy it with me.

What Victoria Loved

VICTORIA’S RATING: 4/5

Ashley Poston delivers another magical-realism gem. A Novel Love Story is the story I’ve only ever dreamt of. We’ve all wished we could live the love stories, experience the fantasy, be swept off our feet by the love interest.

I’ll be quite honest, it took me a while to get into this book. While I was drawn into the concept and the action-filled start, I had to step away from the book after the first fifty pages or so to fully understand what was happening and connect the dots. I suppose, I felt just as confused as Elsy…

But as the story starts to unfold and the puzzle pieces click into place for Elsy, we see more of Eloraton (hello, Stars Hollow!), we learn more about the people in this perfect little place, and we feel the inevitable draw nearer. Yet as I turned each page, I had more and more questions and I got more and more anxious. Until I felt myself rushing to the end to see the whole picture.

From the clever turns of phrases and witty references to literary elements to describing my dream man as a man who “was made with tweed and argyle, and sewn together with an Oxford comma.” I was happy to be swept away into this world, even if just for a little bit.

“I couldn’t remember the last time someone kissed me this passionately — savored me, like I was the last sentence in his favorite book.”

I’m biased - I already know this about myself. But give me a book about traveling to a small town in Ireland AND incorporate the sweetest little book shop, and you’ll have me swoooooning before I even meet the love interest. Fair warning, there are very many emotions involved in this enemies-to-lovers. But hopefully one of those is you falling in love with Ireland.

  • LOVE IN THE PAGES: Book Lovers by Emily Henry (Amazon)

Small-town summers, a protagonist who is learning how to be her own main character, and a bookish, brooding rival. I picked up this book at a Goodwill in the middle of nowhere in middle of summer, and it very quickly claimed a spot as one of my go-to summer re-reads. If this book taught me anything, it’s that what’s meant to be will be!

  • ANOTHER NEW RELEASE: How to End a Love Story by Yulin Kuang (Amazon)

An HoH Book Club Pick! The story itself is beautifully paced and features characters so real I wish I knew them IRL. Yulin highlights the societal nuances of life in L.A. and a NJ suburb, while delicately presenting the intimate and wildly complex dynamics and cultural practices of a Chinese-American family (or more broadly, the experience of an American child raised by immigrant parents). The further into the book I got, the more dots I connected. And when I finally reached the end, I realized I’m going to need to read this book again. This instantly made the list of my all-time favorite books.
