What Victoria Loved
VICTORIA’S RATING: 3.5/5
From the very first few pages you’re basically knee deep in a disaster and you’re just wading through the chaotic mess of Hazel’s life. Then the series of unfortunate events just keep snowballing. At some point you have to really hope for a culminating event just to give poor Hazel a break because no one can be that unlucky.
And then we do get that break with the world’s funniest, most unfortunate meet cute… or meet crash? Yes, not quite a break but a literal crash as our city girl makes her way to the middle of nowhere Pennsylvania that immediately feels like Bluebell, Alabama from Hart of Dixie — what a gem of a show!
The town hates her when she rolls into town. They think she committed bird slaughter, which is as ridiculous as it sounds (side note: I don’t think I’ve ever met a bald eagle with more character). But the quick, witty banter immediately made this small-town romance feel like Stars Hollow. Only further emphasized by the unique mayor, town meetings and overall hullabaloo, the town meetings, the barbershop group (instead of the troubadour)…
My personal favorite oddity a la Story Lake: The potato walk which is “a legal discipline that’s been on the books for nearly two hundred years. The guilty are marched around the park while townsfolk throw potatoes at them.” Literally, how does Lucy come up with this? Potato, potato (IYKYK).
Honestly, Story of My Life is what I imagined when I moved to a small, middle of nowhere town. Nosy neighbors, a grumpy lumberjack (jk I have the sweetest husband who will build me the homestead of my dreams even if he isn’t a grumpy lumberjack-esque man), a quaint downtown area, random town events and festivals that rally the crowd, and overly involved townsfolk who need to share their every thought and opinion during town meetings about needlessly small things… and while I didn’t quite get that, visiting Story Lake through Hazel and Cam was a great consolation. I’m looking forward to visiting this town again in the future!! And hopefully with Gage and Zoey’s story!!

AN AUTHOR & A HOUSE RENOVATION: Beg, Borrow, or Steal (When in Rome #3) by Sarah Adams (Amazon)
She’s a teacher, writing her first romance novel. And he’s a teacher (who is also her nemesis), who has moved in next door and is renovating his house. In classic Sarah form, the dialogue is crisp, the banter is witty, the quips are refreshing. Much like the town of Rome! The characters are dynamic, beautifully complex, yet insanely relatable. The chemistry is off-the-charts and their friendship makes you wish you lived in their neighborhood just so you could witness their exchanges IRL (and maybe even partake in the hi-jinx).

BY THE AUTHOR: Things We Never Got Over (Knockemout #1) by Lucy Score (Amazon)
An outsider whirls into town and is greeted with a less-than-pleasant welcome. Unfortunate circumstances leave her stranded in the quaint town, where she finds herself moving next-door to the grumpy MMC with a charming brother, whose flirting drives the MMC mad. The Knockemout series is a suspenseful, small-town romance that’ll remind you of summer, but the sun won’t be the only reason you’ll need to cool down.
