Sneak Peek: Fan Service by Rosie Danan

Fan Service

by Rosie Danan

When fiction becomes reality, anything can happen.

They say you should never meet your hero… and Rosie Danan delivers the good, the bad, and the HEA that can come out of that interaction in Fan Service!

I became an instant Rosie fan through The Shameless Series, which did a beautiful job addressing taboo topics and honestly, gave me the confidence to chat about sex and the stigma around it. If you haven’t read The Roommate (Amazon) and The Intimacy Experiment (Amazon), add them to your TBR ASAP. After those two books, I will pick up any book written by Rosie — even if it’s a step outside my comfort zone.

Grateful to have received an advanced reader’s copy of Fan Service via NetGalley!

The Sneak Peek

Alex Lawson is a fangirl (and I mean that in the best sense of the word). Having grown up as an outcast in her small Florida town, Alex found her community through the online fan forum she built for The Arcane Files, a long-running werewolf show she had dedicated years of her life studying and archiving. But when her meet and greet with the show’s star, Devin Ashwood, goes awry, Alex’s hero-worship quickly turns into years-long disdain left simmering within.

And as for Devin, the end of the show’s run left him (and his career) spiraling. When he wakes up in the woods outside of his LA home, naked and with no memory of the night before, he shrugs it off as an indulgent night out. But soon too many coincidences reminiscent of his days on The Arcane Files have Devin questioning if fiction has turned into reality. Could the once-in-a-century Wolf Blood Moon have turned him into a werewolf? The claws, fangs and howling on the Santa Monica boardwalk sure point to yes…

Luckily for Devin, his furious research leads him to Alex’s forum — and she’s basically an expert at all things werewolf, right? So he makes his way to Florida and makes her an offer she can’t refuse. She helps him figure out what the heck has happened and how to control his wolf before the next full moon, and he’ll help make her dreams a reality.

Warning: This is a shifter romance. The MMC spends a good amount of time training his wolf (both physically and mentally). That said, Fan Service is a good entry-level book into shifters, if you are unfamiliar with the sub-genre.

What Victoria Loved

VICTORIA’S RATING: 3.5/5

Okay. I was not expecting to like this as much as I did. And it was the most pleasant surprise! I wasn’t sure if this would be a monster romance or how I would fare with shifting / transformation. Occasionally, I get swept into a werewolf mood, as I’m sure you can relate I’ve read plenty of omegaverse romances (see my Omegaverse Round-Up), but tend to stick to non-shifting romances. In this instance, I was pretty into it… maybe not as into it as Alex is, but hey, we don’t kink shame.

Speaking of kinks and preferences, I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I am a scent gal. So when Rosie described the uncontrollable urge to track and scent, it was truly sensory overload. I could feel that desperate ache to cozy into that pulse point and give it a nice strong inhale. Honestly, the way Rosie wove in Devin’s heightened senses was so well-done. From his perspective, there was a nice mixture of confusion, excitement, and curiosity. You could literally sense the shift occurring and feel further drawn into the scene. I liked that we got to experience the learning curve with the characters, dive into the lore and theorize with them to understand in real-time how Devin’s was shifting physically and emotionally.

On the topic of emotions, we always joke at the Haus of Hamilton book club that everyone just needs a little bit of therapy… And for this child actor turned a-hole actor (who also broke his number 1 fan’s young heart)… well, Devin is a pretty good candidate for some time with a shrink. Well really, both he and Alex could’ve used a good dose of therapy. I was worried that Alex’s tendency to de-prioritize herself and her inability to state her needs would lead to a miscommunication trope. Especially when Devin seems to always get his way and potentially have a little diva-moment. Thankfully, they manage to develop a pretty transparent relationship (hard not to when one of them could literally smell a lie), they each carry so much baggage that what’s left unsaid dictates the flow of their relationships (yes, that’s right all their relationships). Hurrah for communication!

And as they each find comfort and strength in the relationship they’ve forged, they learn to trust and build their other friendships. Most importantly, they learn to trust themselves, which helps them realize what it is they really want — love and the pursuit of their passions — a happily ever after.
